Past projects include:

  • NSW Ministry of Transport Household Travel Survey (1997-to date)

A large-scale face-to-face survey conducted with over 5,000 households in Sydney, Blue Mountains, Lower Hunter, Central Coast and Illawarra regions annually. The purpose of the survey is to assess day-to-day travel behaviour. This information contributes to the effective development of transport systems and infrastructure planning. For more information go to the Household Travel Survey Website www.transport.com.nsw.gov.au/tdc/travel-survey.html

  • NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy Evaluation (NSW Health and NSW Department of Education)

Two surveys were conducted: one to evaluate the resources and support services made available to schools as part of the NSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy, and one to measure the level of implementation of the Strategy in schools across the State. This innovative study included telephone interviews with canteen managers and an online survey of school principals from a cross-section of 550 schools in NSW. This was one of the first HVRF projects to use a multimedia methodology, the results of which have been published in an Evaluation Report available from

    http://www.health.nsw.gov.au/obesity/adult/canteens/evaluation.html

  • Green Paper, Growing Jobs on the Mid North Coast (Mid North Coast Regional Development Board)

Although using secondary data, the HVRF developed a comprehensive Green Paper with a summary of the geography and settlement patterns, social and demographic characteristics, and the economy of the Mid North Coast, based on information available at the time of its publication. The paper investigated the key drivers of the Mid North coast economy, identified the areas where strategic policy should be focussed and the key issues in the further development of the Mid North Coast. As well as identifying key opportunities and policy directions, recommendations were also made for the collection of information to fill important information gaps. The identification of these gaps was a key component of the outcomes contained in the Green Paper.

  • Quality of Life Monitoring for the NSW Central Coast (Gosford and Wyong City Councils)

This research involved a cross-sectional survey of 100 residents on the Central Coast to assess quality of life, explain trends in how Central Coast residents live and identify factors associated with quality of life in the Region. In addition to determining the factors associated with quality of life, the results will also serve as a baseline for measuring “quality of life” with a view to repeating the survey in 5 years to determine if specific initiatives undertaken by both Councils and other organisations in the Region have had an impact on quality of life on the Central Coast

  • Community Survey (Newcastle City Council)

The HVRF conducted Newcastle City Council’s 2006 Community Survey. A total of 500 randomly selected members of the community residing in Newcastle LGA were interviewed with a response rate of 80 per cent. The survey assessed community attitudes towards the provision of services in the city and assisted with community input into management planning.

  • Youth on the Move – Young Driver Education and Training Project; Evaluation Study

(Cessnock City Council)

The evaluation study aimed to determine the level of satisfaction with the main output of the Youth on the Move Young Driver Education Program, and evaluate the compliance of the Program with its original aims.  It explored key benefits that graduates were experiencing as a result of their involvement with the Program, and the ways in which the information and instruction that they received influenced their driving behaviour. Part one of the study was a telephone survey of graduates of the Program between 1998 and 2006.  The second part comprised telephone interviews with eight stakeholders in the Project, drawn from the developmental team, the implementation team and the course presentation team. Those interviewed were asked about their perceptions of the Program’s contribution to road safety in the Cessnock LGA and ways of moving forward with the Program into the future.

  • An Evaluation of the Department of Housing's Headleasing Pilot Program in the Hunter Region

(NSW Department of Housing)

The primary aim of the project was to assess the effectiveness of the Headleasing Pilot Program in the provision of public housing in the Hunter Region.  Under the Headleasing Program the Department of Housing (DOH) leases properties from private owners or their agents and then sub-lets them either to existing DOH tenants or to people on the Department's waiting list for public housing.  The study comprised:  a telephone survey of tenants of headleased properties; a telephone survey of agents and owners of headleased properties; a facsimile survey of DOH staff involved in the Program; and a workshop with DOH staff who completed the survey.
