Geographic Competition

The competition, now in its 20th year, is open to Year 11 students from government and non-government schools throughout the Hunter Region. It aims to encourage and recognise excellence in school education with particular emphasis on the study of geography.

Competition Background

The Competition was initiated in 1988 as part of the Hunter Valley Research Foundation’s recognition of Australia’s Bicentenary and serves as a valuable benchmark for students of Geography. The aim of the competition is to recognise and encourage excellence in school education throughout the Hunter Region, with particular emphasis on the study of Geography. It also acknowledges those students who have understood and applied the process of scientific investigation to the world around them.

Entry Requirements

The competition is open to Year 11 students in the Hunter Region from Government and non-Government schools. Each school is allowed ONE project entry based on the SGP (School Geography Project). A full list of requirements can be obtained from the Foundation.

Prizes

Winning,Highly Commended and Commended winners are announced at the Hunter Valley Research Foundation’s annual Christmas function. The winning student receives:

  • Two weeks paid work experience at the Hunter Valley Research Foundation
  • Subscription to Australian Geographic magazine
  • Book voucher for the school library
  • Placement of entry on the Foundation web site for one year
  • Framed certificates

In addition, the competition receives wide publicity through the local media and the Hunter Valley Research Foundation’s publications.

The Winning, Highly Commended and Commended entries are published annually and circulated to all Hunter Region high schools. The document serves as a guide for students undertaking Senior Geography in future years.
